Additional Political Party Funds in Indonesia Considered Corruption-Prone

Kompas Research and Development surveyed public opinion regarding the proposed increase in government funding for political parties (parpol) in Indonesia.

The results show that 65.1% of respondents disagreed with the proposal, with 47.7% disagreeing and 16.4% strongly disagreeing.

Of those who disagreed, the majority (52.4%) considered the additional funding to be prone to corruption.

Public rejection was also due to the lack of transparency in the management of political party funds (19.4%); poor performance of political parties (15.6%); and the belief that current funding is sufficient (6.4%).

Other respondents felt that additional funding was not targeted effectively and would be better used for the benefit of the people (2.9%), that it would burden the state (1.7%), that they lacked trust in political parties (0.7%), and that political parties could find other funding sources (0.3%).

The survey also revealed that 86.3% of respondents believed that the current accountability mechanism for political party funds is not transparent.

"The lack of comprehensive regulations regarding fines, criminal charges, or financial restitution mechanisms demonstrates weak control over party fund reporting," said a Kompas Research and Development researcher in their report on Tuesday (July 29, 2025).

The survey involved 512 respondents from 72 cities across Indonesian provinces, selected randomly according to the population proportion in each province.

Data collection was conducted from June 16-19, 2025, through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 4.25% with a 95% confidence level, under conditions of simple random sampling.
