National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM): Majority of the Public View Freedom of Expression as Still Reasonable

The Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) notes that the majority of Indonesian people still consider freedom of expression and opinion in public spaces to be reasonable. Only a small percentage consider it to be unfree or excessively free.

For example, 52% of the public consider the freedom to criticize the government to be reasonable. Only 29.4% of respondents felt unfree to criticize the government. Meanwhile, 18.6% of respondents considered criticizing the government to be excessively free at this time.

55.7% of respondents considered the freedom to carry or wear the attributes of a particular group to be reasonable. Only 26% of respondents felt that the use of attributes of a particular group was already unfree at this time. Meanwhile, 18.3% of respondents considered it to be excessively free.

Furthermore, 60.6% of respondents considered the freedom to express political choices or campaign to be reasonable. Only 22.5% of respondents felt unfree to express political choices or campaign. Meanwhile, 16.9% of respondents felt this was already excessively free.

Komnas HAM conducted a survey of 1,200 respondents from the fourth week of July to the second week of August 2020. Sampling was conducted using a multistage random sampling method with a margin of error of 2.8%.
