Public Opinion Poll: Majority Oppose Extending Jokowi's Term, Regardless of Reason

The Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) found that the majority of its survey respondents disagreed with extending President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) term beyond 2024. This survey was conducted after news emerged regarding an extension of Jokowi's term until 2027.

LSI asked respondents about three reasons for extending Jokowi's term: the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the need to recover from a slumping economy, and the need to ensure the smooth development of the new capital city (IKN). The majority of respondents preferred Jokowi to end his term in 2024, as stipulated in the constitution.

Specifically, only 20.3% of respondents agreed to an extension due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, only 24.1% agreed to an extension to recover the slumping economy.

Finally, only 22.3% agreed to an extension to ensure the smooth development of IKN.

Some time ago, Muhaimin Iskandar, the General Chairperson of the National Awakening Party (PKB), proposed postponing the general election until 2027. This idea was also supported by other parties, such as Golkar and PAN.

The LSI survey involved 1,197 randomly selected respondents. The survey has a margin of error of approximately 2.89% at a 95% confidence level.

Respondents came from all provinces, proportionally distributed. This survey represents 71% of the national voting population.
