The Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) allocated Rp38.3 trillion (approximately US$2.5 billion) for the 2024 general election budget.
As of February 12, 2024, two days before the election, Rp16.5 trillion (43%) of the budget had been spent, leaving approximately Rp21.8 trillion (57%) remaining.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani stated that the majority of the budget was used by the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu).
"The KPU and Bawaslu spent Rp16.5 trillion on various election needs, including voting and vote counting," said Sri Mulyani in an online APBN KiTa press conference on the Kemenkeu YouTube account on Thursday, February 22, 2024.
Sri Mulyani detailed that KPU and Bawaslu expenditures included the formation of ad hoc bodies, supervision of election organizers and ad hoc institutions, vote collection and counting, management, procurement, reporting, and documentation of logistics, and supervision of the determination of election results.
Further expenditures covered the supervision of the campaign and quiet periods, voter data updating and voter list compilation, program and budget planning, and the drafting of regulations for overseeing election organization.
A smaller portion of the election budget, amounting to Rp300 billion (approximately US$20 million), was used by 14 ministries/institutions (K/L).
These K/L expenditures included election security, handling of violations of the election organizer's code of ethics, information dissemination, socialization, and coverage related to the election, as well as handling constitutional cases related to election organization.
It should be noted that this expenditure report is not comprehensive as it only records election spending for the 2024 fiscal year.
Kemenkeu also allocated election budgets in 2022 and 2023, which, when combined with this year's budget, totals Rp71.3 trillion (approximately US$4.7 billion).
The 2024 election is the most expensive election in Indonesian history, at least since the beginning of the Reform Era in 1999.
