The name of the Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, is being widely discussed in the midst of the potential vice-presidential candidate (cawapres) race. Khofifah is considered one of the strongest vice-presidential candidates for Ganjar Pranowo. Khofifah has also met with Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri.
On the other hand, Khofifah is also mentioned as a vice-presidential candidate for Prabowo Subianto. This was stated by the Secretary General of the Gerindra Party, Ahmad Muzani.
According to Muzani, Khofifah is one of those recommended by the kyai, ulama, and masyaikh in East Java and Central Java.
“Yes, the kyai, ulama, and masyaikh in East Java and Central Java have conveyed their hope that if possible, Pak Prabowo's candidate should be someone close to the santri community. That's the gist of it,” said Muzani, as reported by *Katadata.co.id*, Tuesday (3/10/2023).
Seeing the tug-of-war over Khofifah in the potential vice-presidential candidate race, *Kompas* Research and Development recorded the responses of East Javanese residents regarding Khofifah's suitability as a national leader in 2022.
The results showed that a majority, or 44%, of East Javanese respondents considered Khofifah suitable to run for president or vice-president.
However, 32.3% of East Javanese respondents considered Khofifah unsuitable to run for national leadership.
*Kompas* Research and Development stated that the respondents' approval in that region was influenced by her performance as a regional head.
"The higher the public satisfaction rating with Khofifah's performance, the higher their approval rating for her suitability to be nominated as president or vice-president," wrote the *Kompas* Research and Development team in their report.
The same survey also found that a majority, or 75.3%, of respondents in East Java were satisfied with Governor Khofifah's performance. The remaining 24.7% expressed dissatisfaction.
The research team believes that Khofifah has considerable and widespread political capital throughout East Java.
"(Khofifah) shows appeal to anyone seeking to make her their vice-presidential running mate on the national political stage," concluded *Kompas* Research and Development.
This survey involved 1,300 respondents randomly selected using a stratified systematic sampling method in the province of East Java.
