A survey by Indikator Politik shows that public trust in the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) in managing taxes reached 83.7% in June 2023.

This trust level increased compared to April 2023, which was only 53.7%.

In detail, the 83.7% of respondents who trust the DGT in managing taxes consist of 67.2% who are fairly confident and 16.5% who are very confident.

In the previous survey period, 40.5% of respondents said they were fairly confident, while 13.2% were very confident.

"In June 2023, those (respondents) who were less trusting of the DGT decreased. This is a good opportunity for the DGT to restore its credibility," said Burhanuddin Muhtadi, Executive Director of Indikator Politik Indonesia, in an online press conference on Sunday (2/7/2023).

Burhanuddin stated that the low public trust in the DGT in managing taxes in April 2023 was due to the case involving former tax official, Rafael Alun Trisambodo.

However, he continued, the increase in public trust in the DGT is not commensurate with the increase in respondents' trust in continuing to pay taxes. The survey found that only 63.8% of respondents trust that they will continue to pay taxes.

"This means there is still homework (PR) regarding the impact of the RAT (Rafael Alun Trisambodo) case," said Burhanuddin.

Looking ahead, Burhanuddin said that the country's main revenue in the tax sector has the potential to decline. He urged the government to continue restoring public trust to continue paying taxes.

"So, the public's trust needs to be restored, especially those who are taxpayers, to continue paying taxes," said Burhanuddin.

This survey was conducted through telephone interviews with 1,220 respondents across all provinces in Indonesia. The respondents were aged 17 years or older, or already married, between June 20-24, 2023.

The survey's margin of error is approximately 2.9% at a 95% confidence level, assuming simple random sampling.
