Higher Female Participation in the Jakarta Gubernatorial Election

It turns out that women in DKI Jakarta demonstrate higher political awareness compared to men. This is evident from the female voter turnout in the second round of the DKI Jakarta Regional Head Election (Pilkada) on April 19, 2017, which reached 79.8 percent. Of the total 3.59 million female voters, 2.87 million exercised their right to vote.

Meanwhile, male voter turnout in the second round of the DKI Jakarta Pilkada was only 75.6 percent, or 2.7 million out of a total of 3.58 million male voters. The total voter turnout (male + female) in the second round of the DKI Pilkada reached 78 percent, or 5.66 million out of a total of 7.26 million voters. This figure is higher than the first round of the DKI Pilkada on February 15, 2017.

Based on the General Election Commission's count of polling station results (Form C1), the Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno pair won with 3.24 million votes, or 57.95 percent of the vote. Their opponent, the Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok)-Djarot Saiful Hidayat pair, received 2.35 million votes, or 42.05 percent.
