The 2024 general election (Pemilu) is scheduled to begin in mid-year. Political parties are starting to formulate their strategies to win the upcoming election.
One example is the United Indonesia Coalition (Koalisi Indonesia Bersatu), declared by Golkar Party, National Mandate Party (PAN), and the United Development Party (PPP) on Thursday (May 12, 2022), to nominate a presidential and vice-presidential candidate.
Such a coalition is necessary because no single political party can nominate a presidential and vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election according to Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections. This is because the vote share of political parties (Parpol) in the 2019 General Election was below the parliamentary threshold (parliamentary threshold) of at least 25% of the total national valid votes.
However, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) can nominate a presidential candidate because it won 128 seats in the House of Representatives (DPR). This number exceeds the requirement of the Election Law, which is 115 seats (20%) of the total 575 seats.
In the 2019 General Election, PDI Perjuangan received the most votes, namely 27.05 million votes, or only 19.33% of the total 139.97 million valid votes nationally. This was followed by the Gerindra Party with 17.59 million votes (12.57%), and the Golkar Party with 17.23 million votes (12.31%).
Nine political parties successfully secured representation in the House of Representatives (DPR) by obtaining more than 4% of the total national valid votes. These nine parties are PDI Perjuangan, Gerindra Party, Golkar Party, PKB, and Nasdem. Also included are PKS, Democratic Party, PAN, and PPP.
Meanwhile, seven other parties did not qualify for parliament because their vote share was below the 4% parliamentary threshold. These seven parties are Perindo, Berkarya Party, PSI, Hanura Party, PBB, Garuda Party, and PKPI.
