Bank Indonesia launched new 2016 series banknotes and coins as legal tender in the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. These new banknotes and coins became effective upon their announcement on December 19, 2016. The new currency consists of seven banknotes and four coins. The introduction of this new currency does not invalidate the old currency, as it has not yet been withdrawn from circulation.
The 2016 banknotes are in denominations of Rp 1,000, Rp 2,000, Rp 5,000, Rp 10,000, Rp 20,000, Rp 50,000, and Rp 100,000. The coins are in denominations of Rp 100, Rp 200, Rp 500, and Rp 1,000.
Total currency in circulation (UYD) up to September 2016 reached Rp 563.2 trillion. This comprises Rp 555.8 trillion in banknotes and Rp 7.4 trillion in coins. The highest denomination in circulation was Rp 100,000, reaching Rp 356.6 trillion or approximately 63.2 percent of the total UYD. Meanwhile, coins below Rp 100 were the smallest, amounting to only Rp 647.7 billion or approximately 0.1 percent of the total UYD.
