Ninety-eight percent of Freeport McMoran Inc.'s gold sales originate from Indonesia. Of the company's total gold sales of 1,079,000 ounces, 1,054,000 ounces, or 97.68 percent, came from mining operations in Grasberg, Papua. Grasberg is the world's largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine.
In Freeport McMoran Inc.'s financial report for December 2016, gold sales from Indonesia decreased by 13.89 percent from the previous period, which was 1,224,000 ounces. Meanwhile, the average selling price in 2016 reached US$1,238 per ounce, a 9.6 percent increase from the previous US$1,129 per ounce. Therefore, Freeport's gold sales from Indonesia amounted to US$1.3 billion out of total consolidated revenue of US$14.8 billion in 2016.
Previously, the Indonesian government banned PT Freeport Indonesia from exporting its concentrate since January 12, 2017. This policy was implemented because the American mining company refused to change its status from a contract of work (KK) holder to a special mining business license (IUPK) holder. Subsequently, Freeport McMoran's Chief Executive Officer, Richard Adkerson, planned to file a lawsuit with an international arbitration body because the Indonesian government was deemed to have unilaterally halted the export of PT Freeport Indonesia's minerals.
