During the first quarter of 2022, energy prices increased across the globe.

According to an Ipsos survey of citizens in 30 countries, the majority (28%) of respondents attributed the rise in energy prices to the Russia-Ukraine geopolitical tensions. This view was most prevalent among respondents in European Union countries, namely the Netherlands, Italy, and Belgium.

Another 25% of respondents believed the increase was due to supply failing to meet rising demand. This perspective was more common among respondents from outside the European Union, such as South Korea, Mexico, Peru, and Saudi Arabia.

18% of respondents considered the cause to be volatility in oil and gas market prices, with the highest percentage of this view coming from respondents in Malaysia, South Africa, and Argentina.

Meanwhile, 13% attributed the rising energy prices to climate change policies. This group generally consisted of respondents from India, Germany, and Poland.

16% of respondents were unsure about the cause of the energy price increase. This group of uncertain respondents was most numerous in Russia, Japan, and Germany.

This online survey was conducted from February 18 to March 4, 2022, involving 22,534 respondents aged 16-74 from 30 countries.
