Bank Indonesia (BI) reported that Indonesia's external debt (ULN) stood at US$406.3 billion in May 2022, down 0.9% month-to-month (m-to-m).

This decline in ULN has occurred for three consecutive months since March 2022, as shown in the graph.

Broken down by borrower, government ULN in May 2022 amounted to US$188.2 billion, down from US$190.5 billion the previous month.

Central bank ULN in May 2022 was US$8.7 billion, stagnant from the previous month.

Meanwhile, private sector ULN in May 2022 totaled US$209.4 billion, down from US$210.8 billion the previous month.

According to Erwin Haryono, Head of BI's Communication Department, the downward trend in ULN is in line with the maturity of several series of State Bonds (SBN).

"The impact of global sentiment that triggered a shift in portfolio investment in the domestic SBN market by non-resident investors also contributed to the decrease in government ULN," said Erwin in a press release on Friday (July 15, 2022).

BI assesses that Indonesia's debt structure remains healthy, as the ratio of ULN to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is still in the range of 32.3%. This ratio decreased from 32.6% the previous month.

Indonesia's ULN structure is also considered healthy because it is dominated by long-term debt, with a proportion of 86.7% of the total ULN.
