Based on Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR) data from Bank Indonesia (BI), the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) closed at 16,833 per United States dollar (USD) on Thursday (April 18, 2025).

He explained that gold's movement, breaking its all-time high above US$3,300 per troy ounce, indicates high market interest in safe haven assets. This is putting pressure on riskier asset classes, including the Rupiah.

Limited Potential for Rupiah Strengthening

Lukman Leong, an analyst at Doo Financial Futures, believes the Rupiah still has the potential to strengthen against the US dollar. "The US dollar is still under pressure from concerns surrounding Trump's tariff policies and the dovish stance in Powell's speech," said Lukman.

However, he added that this strengthening will be limited by risk-off sentiment in the equity market and weak domestic sentiment. Lukman projects the Rupiah will move between Rp16,750 per USD and Rp16,850 per USD.
