Alert! Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Monday, March 16, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday (March 16, 2026) at 18:28 WIB. In the past week, Mount Semeru has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 300 meters above the peak (3,976 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity, moving towards the southwest. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 16, 2026, from 12:00 to 18:00 WIB recorded 20 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 41-134 seconds.

Additionally, there was 1 emission earthquake with an amplitude of 6 millimeters and a duration of 42 seconds, as well as 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 8 millimeters, s-p interval of 2 seconds, and a duration of 11 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Beyond this distance, residents are advised not to carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks along the Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by expanding pyroclastic flows and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,042 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 556 events.
