Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) achieved a net profit of Rp1.46 trillion in the first quarter of 2023, a 47.6% increase compared to the first quarter of 2022 (year-on-year/yoy).
This profit increase is in line with the rise in temporary *syirkah* funds managed by BSI.
Temporary *syirkah* funds are funds received by Islamic banks from customers, where the bank has the right to manage and invest these funds, with time limits and provisions for profit/loss sharing based on agreement.
The temporary *syirkah* funds managed by BSI utilize a *mudharabah* contract, where the customer is the capital owner (*shahibul maal*), while the bank acts as the fund manager (*mudharib*).
By the end of the first quarter of 2023, BSI's total temporary *syirkah* funds reached Rp207.41 trillion, a 4.5% increase (yoy).
These funds consist of *mudharabah* current accounts worth Rp29.3 trillion, *mudharabah* savings accounts Rp72.08 trillion, *mudharabah* deposits Rp103.9 trillion, subordinated *mudharabah* sukuk Rp1.37 trillion, and *mudharabah* term financing Rp749.7 billion.
From all these funds, BSI, as the fund manager (*mudharib*), received profit sharing worth Rp4.07 trillion in the first quarter of 2023, a 12.4% increase (yoy). BSI's income from other businesses also increased by 21.1% (yoy) to Rp985.6 billion.
Throughout the first quarter of 2023, BSI also recorded a 20.15% (yoy) growth in financing to Rp213.3 trillion, with a gross non-performing financing (NPF) of 2.36%.
"The company focuses on long-term, prudent financing and diversifies financing alternatives suitable for customer segments. This allows for effective mitigation of financing risks," said PT BSI President Director Hery Gunardi in a press conference (April 27, 2023).
Despite recording positive financial performance, in mid-second quarter 2023, specifically in May, BSI's mobile banking service experienced disruptions or errors.
These disruptions caused many BSI customers to complain on social media due to difficulties in making transactions, and this issue even became a trending topic on Twitter on Tuesday morning (May 9, 2023).
