Instant noodles have become an alternative food source for some Indonesians. Besides being easy to cook, instant noodles have a long shelf life.
According to Instantnoodles data, Indonesian instant noodle consumption increased by 4.98% to 13.27 billion packages in 2021 compared to the previous year. Social restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic made instant noodles an alternative food stock at home. Furthermore, social assistance during the pandemic, partly in the form of instant noodles, also contributed to the increase in instant noodle consumption last year.
Last year's instant noodle consumption was the highest since 2015, as shown in the graph. This amount places Indonesia as the second largest consumer in the world after China, which consumed 43.99 billion packages last year.
Fried noodles (Mi Goreng) are the most popular type of instant noodles in Indonesia. Flavors like vegetable, chicken, and shrimp with chili seasoning are widely consumed. Because the majority of Indonesians are Muslim, most instant noodles in Indonesia are halal products.
Indonesian instant noodle consumption accounts for 11.27% of total global instant noodle consumption, which reached 118.18 billion packages last year.
