Instant noodle consumption in Indonesia has steadily increased in recent years. This increase significantly accelerated following the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to data from the World Instant Noodles Association, Indonesian instant noodle consumption reached 14.26 billion servings/packages in 2022. This represents a 7.46% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to the 13.27 billion packages consumed in 2021.
In 2021, there was a 4.98% YoY increase in consumption, and in 2020, a 0.95% YoY growth was recorded.
In 2019, recorded instant noodle consumption in Indonesia was only 12.52 billion packages. Compared to 2022, this represents a 13.89% increase in consumption since the pre-pandemic period.
Social restrictions implemented at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic made instant noodles a popular food staple for households. Although the pandemic has gradually subsided, the trend of high instant noodle consumption in Indonesia continues, as evidenced by the significant increase in consumption last year.
Last year's instant noodle consumption in Indonesia was the highest since 2014, as shown in the graph above. This achievement places Indonesia as the second largest consumer of instant noodles globally, after China, which consumed 45.07 billion packages in 2022.
Global instant noodle consumption reached 121.2 billion servings in 2022. This means that Indonesia's instant noodle consumption accounts for 11.76% of the global total.
According to the World Instant Noodles Association, fried noodles (mi goreng) are the most popular type among Indonesian consumers. "Savory flavors like vegetables, chicken, and shrimp with chili sauce are widely consumed. Because the majority of the population is Muslim, most products are halal," as quoted from instantnoodles.org on Thursday, May 25, 2023.
