Warning! Mount Marapi Erupts Again This Afternoon (Sunday, February 25, 2024)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at 11:12 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 17 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the eruption was not visually observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 2.7 millimeters and a duration of 26 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB on February 25, 2024, showed 36 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 1-3.8 millimeters and durations of 22-195 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-2 millimeters and durations of 11-27 seconds, and 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 1.2 millimeters and a duration of 17 seconds.

The PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists to avoid entering and engaging in activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 269 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has experienced the most eruptions, with 74 recorded events.
