Based on data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), Indonesia generated 37.37 million tons of waste in 2022.
This figure is an increase compared to 2021 and represents the highest recorded waste volume since 2019.
However, this KLHK SIPSN data does not reflect the total national waste volume.
This is because the waste data recorded in 2022 only comes from 321 regencies/cities, while Indonesia has a total of 514 regencies/cities.
Therefore, the actual amount of waste could be much higher than recorded.
In 2022, the recorded waste volume consisted mainly of food waste (40.35%).
The next largest waste categories were plastic (18.05%), wood/twigs (12.91%), and paper/cardboard (11.29%).
There were also smaller amounts of metal waste (3.05%), textiles (2.52%), glass (2.22%), rubber/leather (2.18%), and other waste (7.43%).
Based on source, in 2022, Indonesian waste originated mostly from households (38.3%), markets (27.71%), and commercial centers (14.38%).
These three areas contributed 80.39% to the total recorded waste volume in 2022, while the remaining 19.61% came from offices, public facilities, industries, and other areas.
