Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupted on Saturday Afternoon; Status Raised to Alert

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 12:53 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 14 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak or 1,923 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with low to moderate intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 25.9 millimeters and a duration of 36 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 2, 2024, from 06:00 to 12:00 WITA showed 9 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7.2-21.2 millimeters and durations of 48-106 seconds.

Then, there was 1 rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 2.3 mm and a duration of 62 seconds, and 105 tremor events with amplitudes of 1.7-13.3 millimeters and durations of 26-114 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and the residents of Lamawolo, Lamatokan, and Jontona villages to remain vigilant against the potential dangers of lava flows/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 322 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions (93 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 37 times.
