Mount Ibu Erupts Again Today, Eruption Height Reaches 1,500 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday (26/1/2024) at 17.27 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 5 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 1,500 meters above the peak (2,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the south and southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 127 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismicity on January 26, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 35 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 26-105 seconds.

Then, there were 54 emission quakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds, and 5 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-15 millimeters and durations of 41-193 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 119 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (48 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 18 times.
