Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts on Saturday Night; Status Raised to Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 9:41 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 12 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and a duration of 137 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on May 4, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 4 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 8.8-37 millimeters and durations of 97-254 seconds.

Then, there were 2 harmonic tremors with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 21-26 seconds, and 2 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 7.4-14.8 millimeters and durations of 19 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 3-kilometer radius in the Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the East Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 626 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (209 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 87 times.
