Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Morning (Thursday, January 18, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday (18/1/2024) at 07.50 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 15 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak or 2,084 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to brown in color with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on January 18, 2024, from 00.00-06.00 WITA showed 3 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 37-47.3 millimeters and durations of 43-180 seconds.

Then, there were 4 pyroclastic flow quakes with amplitudes of 37-47.3 mm and durations of 37-150 seconds, and 11 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 7.4-37 mm and durations of 19-101 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 6-kilometer radius to the north and northeast.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 79 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has experienced the most eruptions with 38 eruptions.
