Mount Marapi Erupts Again Tonight, Eruption Height Approximately 900 Meters

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 6:22 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 900 meters above the peak or 3,791 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southeast. The eruption of Mount Marapi was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Marapi is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on February 20, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 20.5 millimeters and a duration of 76 seconds.

Then, there were 9 tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.3-23.6 millimeters and durations of 23-84 seconds, and 2 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.5 millimeters and durations of 19-28 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 229 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has erupted the most, with 64 eruptions.
