Mount Marapi Erupts on Saturday Night, Activity Level Raised to Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 10:59 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 19 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 9 millimeters and a duration of 42 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 2, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB showed 6 volcanic gas emissions with amplitudes of 1.7-4.8 millimeters and durations of 28-100 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.5-2.7 millimeters and durations of 13-28 seconds, and 6 hybrid/multiple-phase earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.7-3.6 millimeters, S-P arrival times unobserved, and durations of 16-22 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists to not enter and refrain from activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 327 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has experienced the most eruptions with 98 occurrences.
