Mount Marapi Erupts Again Today, Eruption Reaches 500 Meters

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 10:14 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This is the third eruption in the last week.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 500 meters above the peak (3,391 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption of Mount Marapi was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB on January 19, 2024, showed 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 1.9 millimeters and a duration of 19 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 3 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5.6-30.4 millimeters, S-P intervals of 21-24.3 seconds, and durations of 51-121 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-2 millimeters, predominantly 1 millimeter.

The PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists to not enter and refrain from activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 91 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has erupted the most (45 times), while Mount Marapi has erupted 22 times.
