Mount Ibu Erupts on Sunday Morning, Status Remains at Alert Level

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (28/1/2024) at 10.10 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 600 meters above the peak (1,925 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 26 millimeters and a duration of 58 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 28, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 26 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 23-98 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 132 volcanic tremor events with amplitudes of 5-14 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds, and 10 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-15 millimeters and durations of 32-227 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a 3.5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 125 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (48 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 20 times.
