Data from the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) shows that up to August 2019, there were 141 forest and land fire (karhutla) incidents in Indonesia. Over the past ten years, Indonesia has experienced 1,226 karhutla incidents. The highest number of karhutla incidents occurred in 2018 and 2016, with 527 and 178 incidents respectively.
In 2019, karhutla spread across several regions, including Riau, South Sumatra, Jambi, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan. The Indonesian National Police (Polri) stated that 175 individuals and four corporations were suspects in karhutla cases up to September 2019. These corporations are PT SSS (Riau), PT Palmindo Gemilang Kencana (Central Kalimantan), PT SAP (West Kalimantan), and PT SISU (West Kalimantan). The four corporations were named as suspects due to negligence and irresponsibility regarding the land rights granted to them.
