Indonesia's forested land area decreased by 1.6 million hectares between 2014 and 2019.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KemenLHK) reported that Indonesia's land area is divided into 94.1 million hectares of forested land (50% of the total land area) and 93.6 million hectares of non-forested land in 2019. From 2014 to 2019, the area of forested land in Indonesia decreased by 1.6 million hectares, from 95.7 million hectares in 2014 to 94.1 million hectares in 2019.

Forest degradation due to changes in land use and purpose is the main factor contributing to the decrease in forested land area.

In 2019, the largest area of forested land was in Papua, at 32.5 million hectares (34.5% of the total national forested land area of 94.1 million hectares), followed by Kalimantan at 24.7 million hectares (26.25%).

Maluku, Sulawesi, and Java have less than 15% forested land. Bali and Nusa Tenggara have the smallest area of forested land, at 1.7 million hectares (1.81%).

Forested land is categorized into three groups based on function: Production Forest, Protected Forest, and Conservation Forest. In 2019, these areas measured 68.8 million hectares, 29.7 million hectares, and 21.9 million hectares, respectively.
