Mount Marapi Erupts Again This Morning (Sunday, March 24, 2024)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 05:38 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This marks the fourth eruption in the past week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the eruption was not visually observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.5 millimeters and a duration of 49 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's alert level remains at Level III (Siaga, or Alert). Observations from March 24, 2024, between 00:00 and 06:00 WIB, showed one eruption with an amplitude of 30.5 millimeters and a duration of 49 seconds.

Additionally, one hybrid/multiple-phase earthquake with an amplitude of 1.7 millimeters (S-P arrival time not observed) and a duration of 24 seconds, and two deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-1.2 millimeters (S-P arrival time 0.9-1.9 seconds) and durations of 9-11 seconds were recorded.

PVMBG urges residents around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists to avoid entering and engaging in activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

In 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 429 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has experienced the most eruptions, with a total of 143.
