Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again in the Early Hours of Today (Sunday, March 3, 2024)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at 04:44 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 15 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (1,923 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.1 millimeters and a duration of 67 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 3, 2024, from 18:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 8 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 8.9-33.6 millimeters and durations of 40-94 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 113 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 1.8-16.4 millimeters and durations of 20-119 seconds, and 15 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.7-16.5 millimeters and durations of 106-331 seconds.

PVMBG urges residents around Mount Ili Lewotolok and visitors/climbers/tourists to avoid entering and conducting activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity. Residents of Lamawolo Village, Lamatokan Village, and Jontona Village should remain vigilant against potential hazards from lava collapses/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 336 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions (105 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 38 times.
