Mount Ibu Erupts on Sunday Night, Status Remains on Alert

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at 10:10 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 8 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,200 meters above the peak (2,525 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 89 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on February 11, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 17 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 28-149 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 96 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 5 millimeters and durations of 51-152 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a 3.5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 186 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (56 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 32 times.
