Indonesia is one of the world's largest coal exporters. According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Indonesia's coal exports in 2020 reached 405 million tons. This figure exceeded the initial export target of 395 million tons by 102.5%.
Indonesia produced a total of 563.73 million tons of coal. The majority, or 71.8%, was exported, rather than used domestically.
China was the largest destination for Indonesian coal exports, receiving 127.7 million tons, equivalent to 32% of the total export volume in 2020.
India was the second largest importer of Indonesian coal, with 97.5 million tons (24%). This was followed by the Philippines and Japan, with 27.4 million tons (6.8%) and 26.9 million tons (6.6%) respectively.
Indonesia also exported 26.1 million tons (6.4%) to Malaysia and 24.7 million tons (6.1%) to South Korea.

It is important to note that the Ministry of ESDM officially banned coal exports starting in January 2022. This ban was implemented due to concerns about low domestic coal supply for coal-fired power plants (PLTU).
