Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is the primary fuel used by Indonesian households for cooking.
However, for at least the past ten years, Indonesia has relied on imported LPG supplies, as domestic LPG production is insufficient to meet national consumption needs.
According to a report by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the volume of LPG consumption in Indonesia reached 8.9 million tons in 2024.
However, domestic LPG production in 2024 was only 1.96 million tons, far below consumption needs.
As a result, Indonesia imported 6.91 million tons of LPG in 2024.
A similar trend has consistently occurred since at least 2015, as shown in the graph.
During the 2015–2024 period, the contribution of imports to the national LPG supply increasingly grew, while the contribution of domestic production shrank.
In 2015, the proportion of LPG imports accounted for 66% of Indonesia's total LPG consumption. By 2024, this proportion rose to 78%.
On the other hand, in 2015, domestic LPG production still contributed 36% to total consumption. However, by 2024, its proportion decreased to 22%.
