Number of Indonesian Oil and Gas Development Wells 2020-2025

The Upstream Oil and Gas Special Working Unit (SKK Migas) had drilled 337 development wells by May 2025.

According to Katadata news, this figure represents a 20% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to the same period in 2024, when 281 development wells were drilled.

“The success of development well drilling activities contributed to the increase in oil and gas production and lifting in June 2025. In June 2025, oil lifting was recorded above the State Budget (APBN) target,” wrote SKK Migas in a press release, as quoted by Katadata on Monday (July 14, 2025).

Development well drilling activities experienced a downturn from 2014 to 2017. Conditions began to improve from 2018. During the Covid-19 pandemic, from 2020 to 2022, development well drilling activities actually surged.

SKK Migas reported that 395 wells were constructed in 2020, increasing to 616 wells in 2021 and 780 wells in 2022.

The number also increased in 2023 to 799 wells and reached 899 wells in 2024.

Meanwhile, national oil lifting as of June 29, 2025, reached 602,000 barrels per day (bpd). This volume is close to the oil lifting target of 605,000 bpd set in the 2025 APBN.

“Up to June 29, 2025, production reached 602,000 barrels, so we have just inaugurated a project that will add 30,000 bpd to production,” said Bahlil in a working meeting with Commission XII of the DPR RI on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

The project Bahlil referred to is the Banyu Urip Infill Clastic (BUIC) in the Banyu Urip Field, operated by ExxonMobil Cepu Limited (EMCL) in Bojonegoro, East Java, which was inaugurated on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
