According to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) *Global Energy Review 2025* report, global energy demand grew by 2.2% in 2024.
This figure is significantly faster than the annual average of 1.3% between 2013 and 2023.
The IEA details that global energy demand reached 13.9 exajoules (EJ) last year. Of this, renewable energy accounted for the largest share, at 38% of total demand.
The next largest demands were natural gas at 28% and coal at 15%.
Oil accounted for 11%, and nuclear power for 8%.
The IEA notes that various elements of the global energy system experienced vastly different growth rates in 2024. This reflects the impact of short-term factors and deeper structural trends.
"This increase is partly due to the influence of extreme weather, which we estimate added 0.3 percentage points to the 2.2% growth," the IEA wrote in its report, as quoted on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).
Despite the increase, energy demand grew more slowly than the global economy, which expanded by 3.2% in 2024, nearing its long-term average.
