The price of energy, such as electricity, is not cheap in many countries. In fact, energy tariffs in several countries skyrocketed in 2022 amid disrupted global energy supply chains caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to Global Petrol Prices, most of the highest household electricity tariffs are in Europe, where prices in Denmark, Germany, and Belgium are roughly double those in France and Greece. For example, electricity prices in many European countries are more than two or three times the global average of $0.14 per kilowatt-hour.

During the first quarter of 2022, household electricity tariffs in the European Union surged 32% compared to the previous year.

Denmark has the world's most expensive electricity tariff, at US$0.46 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), or approximately Rp7,094 (assuming an exchange rate of 1 USD = Rp15,422.6). Electricity prices in Germany and Belgium reached US$0.44 and US$0.41, respectively.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's electricity tariff is US$0.09, or around Rp1,388. Indonesia's electricity prices are among the cheapest in the world, ranking 92nd globally.

In the United States (US), consumer electricity prices have increased by almost 16% year-on-year compared to September of the previous year—the highest increase in over four decades—fueling higher inflation. However, households are more shielded from the impact of Russian supply disruptions because the US is a net energy exporter.
