According to Layoffs.fyi, 88,964 employees in global technology and startup companies experienced layoffs between January and September 16, 2025. These layoffs were conducted by 199 companies.

The trend of layoffs in this sector has been fluctuating. The largest layoff this year occurred in April 2025, affecting 24,500 people. The lowest number of layoffs was recorded in July 2025, with 1,606 affected employees.

Citing Business Insider, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, reportedly laid off 500 employees. These employees were from the data annotation team responsible for developing the Grok chatbot.

Layoff notices were sent via email on Friday, September 12, 2025. The affected employees were from the general AI tutor team, the largest division in xAI.

“We have decided to accelerate expansion and prioritize specialist AI tutors, while reducing our focus on general AI tutors. This strategic change is effective immediately,” the layoff notification email stated, as reported by Business Insider on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

The affected employees will reportedly be paid until their contracts end or a maximum of November 30, 2025. However, their access to company systems was revoked on the day the layoffs were announced.
