The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has mapped youth unemployment in Indonesia from August 2020 to 2024. Youth in this context refers to the workforce aged 15 to 29 years.
In 2020, the number of unemployed in the 15-19 age group reached 1,624,465 people, 20-24 years totaled 2,756,019 people, and 25-29 years totaled 1,577,866 people.
In 2021, the number of unemployed in the 15-19 age group decreased to 1,469,332 people, 20-24 years decreased to 2,597,807 people, and 25-29 years decreased to 1,516,745 people.
In 2022, the number of unemployed in the 15-19 age group surged to 1,856,292 people, while the 20-24 age group saw a slight decrease to 2,540,121 people, and the 25-29 age group experienced a drastic decrease to 1,166,262 people.
In 2023, the number of unemployed in the 15-19 age group decreased to 1,633,463 people, while the 20-24 age group increased to 2,670,475 people, and the 25-29 age group saw a significant increase to 1,292,355 people.
In 2024, the number of unemployed in the 15-19 age group decreased to 1,431,960 people, the 20-24 age group decreased to 2,497,979 people, and the 25-29 age group also decreased to 1,258,842 people.
Previously, the government launched a national internship program specifically for Generation Z or workers born between 1997 and 2012. The Indonesian Minister of Manpower, Yassierli, stated that this program differs from the Kartu Prakerja program.
She stated that the national internship program will begin in July 2025, offering 25,000 internship positions for three weeks before starting a one-month job in August 2025.
Yassierli mentioned that these positions are open to individuals with educational backgrounds ranging from high school (SMA/SMK) equivalent to Bachelor's degrees (S1). She explained that each educational background will be matched with 15 types of prepared jobs.
