The working conditions of digital platform workers in Indonesia are generally still substandard.
This is recorded in the report *Work Standards in the Platform Work Economy*, released by the research institution Fairwork in collaboration with the Centre for Innovation Policy and Governance (CIPG).
Fairwork evaluates the fairness of working conditions in digital platform companies through literature reviews, worker interviews and surveys, and company management interviews.
The indicators assessed are fair wages, fair work protection, fair contracts, fair management, and worker voice representation in each company.
The research results are then processed into a score on a scale of 0-10. The higher the score, the better the working conditions on the digital platform are assumed to be.
Using this method, in 2023 online motorcycle taxi (ojol) companies such as Gojek and Grab only received a score of 2 out of 10 points.
Other digital platform companies assessed, namely Deliveree, KliknClean, Lalamove, Maxim, Paxel, ShopeeFood, Borzo, and inDrive, even had lower scores, as shown in the graph.
"Wages and working conditions for platform workers in Indonesia are still far from decent work standards," said Fairwork in its report.
"Poor working conditions are characterized by the lack of worker rights, long working hours, unstable and low income, the absence of officially recognized trade unions, worker safety risks, limited access to accident and health insurance, and various gender-based challenges for female workers," it continued.
Based on this condition, Fairwork encourages digital platform companies to implement transparent and fair payment mechanisms, and to ensure that their workers receive adequate compensation after deducting production costs, such as gasoline, credit, service, and others.
Fairwork also encourages the government to develop a regulatory framework, one of which is to set clear standards regarding working hours, safety protection, and minimum wages for digital platform workers.
"As the platform work economy continues to grow, policymakers and other stakeholders must be able to navigate this complexity, maximizing the benefits of this work while addressing its potential downsides," said Fairwork.
