Most Indonesian Migrant Workers in 2024 Originate from Java Island

According to data from the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI), 297,434 Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) were placed in various countries throughout 2024.

The majority of PMIs originated from provinces on the island of Java, namely East Java, Central Java, and West Java.

Combined, these three Javanese provinces contributed approximately 70% of the total national PMI throughout last year.

Here is a list of the top 10 provinces of origin for Indonesian migrant workers in 2024:

1. East Java: 79,339 people
2. Central Java: 66,611 people
3. West Java: 61,556 people
4. West Nusa Tenggara (NTB): 31,031 people
5. Lampung: 25,162 people
6. Bali: 8,143 people
7. North Sumatra: 7,176 people
8. Banten: 3,567 people
9. East Nusa Tenggara (NTT): 2,146 people
10. South Sumatra: 2,021 people

In 2024, Hong Kong was the primary destination country for PMIs, with 99,773 placements, or 33% of the total national PMI.

The next main destination countries for PMIs were Taiwan (84,581 people), Malaysia (51,723 people), and Japan (12,720 people).

Regarding professions, the majority of PMIs, 100,096 people, worked as domestic workers, followed by caregivers (52,029 people), general workers (22,527 people), and plantation laborers (20,665 people).
