Generation Z (Gen Z) comprises those born between 1997 and 2012. In 2023, approximately one in ten Gen Z members of the Indonesian workforce was unemployed.
This is recorded in the September 2024 edition of the *Labor Market Brief* report released by the Institute for Economic and Community Research, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia (LPEM FEB UI).
"The open unemployment rate for Gen Z reached 9.37%, or approximately 4.84 million people out of the total Gen Z working-age population," wrote the LPEM FEB UI team in their report.
"This figure indicates that almost one in ten Gen Z individuals currently in the workforce is unemployed," they continued.
The Gen Z unemployment rate is higher than the national unemployment rate, which was around 5% in 2023.
"The high open unemployment rate among Gen Z reflects various factors, such as a skills gap with industry needs, limited work experience, or challenges in finding jobs that align with their aspirations and educational backgrounds," said the LPEM FEB UI team.
LPEM FEB UI obtained the Gen Z unemployment figures from an analysis of data from the National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
