According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the majority of farmers in Indonesia are elderly, while young farmers are few.

Elderly farmers comprise the age groups 45-54 years (27.09%), 55-64 years (23.2%), and 65 years and over (16.15%).

Young farmers, on the other hand, consist of the age groups 15-24 years (1.24%), 25-34 years (10.24%), and 35-44 years (22.08%).

"The percentage of young farmers under 34 years old is only 11.5 percent, and almost 70 percent of Indonesian farmers are over 45 years old," wrote the BPS in its report *Indonesia's Agricultural Potential* (September 2024).

"Young farmers, with their potential, creativity, innovation, and mastery of technology, are expected to bring a new spirit to advancing Indonesian agriculture. However, in reality, the interest of the younger generation in entering the agricultural world remains minimal," said the BPS.

"The agricultural sector is also seen as providing little prestige and social standing. In fact, the succession of farm management to children is only 40 percent, meaning that most parents who are farmers do not want their children to work in the agricultural sector," it continued.
