A report from the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows a decrease in the number of workers in labor unions in 2022.
A total of 7.50 million workers were registered as union members in 2022, resulting in a union density rate (UDR) of 11.76%.

By sector, the service sector contributed the largest number of unionized workers, with 5.25 million workers (15.54%). The total number of workers registered in this sector in 2022 was 33.83 million.
This figure represents a decrease compared to 2021, when 5.35 million workers were union members, with a UDR of 16.43%.

This is down from 2021, when 288,000 agricultural workers were union members (UDR 3.13%).
The BPS notes that unionized workers are guaranteed under Law Number 21 of 2000 concerning Trade Unions/Labor Unions.
According to this law, labor unions function as parties in the creation of collective labor agreements, resolving industrial relations issues, and reaching agreements on employee rights and obligations.
The BPS explains that labor unions also serve as a channel for voicing aspirations and demands in fighting for the rights and interests of their members, and as a means of creating harmonious and just industrial relations in accordance with the law.
"Labor unions are formed by workers to ensure that their position and rights as workers are balanced with their obligations to employers," writes the BPS in its report titled *Indikator Pekerjaan Layak di Indonesia 2022* (*Decent Work Indicators in Indonesia 2022*).
