According to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Indonesia's reading literacy scores declined in 2022.
This assessment was conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
In 2022, Indonesia's PISA reading literacy score reached 359 points, a decrease of 12 points compared to 2018.
Despite this, the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek), Nadiem Makarim, assessed that Indonesia's point decrease was not worse than other countries.
"We see that the world average dropped by about 18 points, but Indonesia only dropped by 12 points. So, it's significantly better than the international average," said Nadiem in a press conference on Wednesday (6/12/2023).
According to Nadiem, the relatively small learning loss in Indonesia reflects the resilience of teachers, also supported by various pandemic handling programs from the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research, and Technology.
"Internet quota assistance was provided to more than 25 million students and 1.7 million teachers to access materials and conduct online learning," said Nadiem.
The OECD usually conducts the PISA study every three years, involving 37 OECD member countries and 44 partner countries.
Initially, the PISA study was scheduled for 2021. However, the data collection was postponed to May-June 2022, after the Covid-19 pandemic subsided.
In Indonesia, this program involved a sample of 14,340 fifteen-year-old students randomly selected from 413 schools/madrasahs.
The sample is considered to represent the entire Indonesian demographic, including underdeveloped areas.
