Based on a national survey by the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), 25.6% of Indonesian millennial and Gen Z respondents prefer a presidential candidate with an academic background. This is the highest proportion compared to other backgrounds.

The next most preferred backgrounds among young people are entrepreneurs (11.1%), religious figures (10.6%), and politicians (9.4%), while cultural figures were the least preferred, at only 6%. The remaining 2% of respondents stated other backgrounds.

“The background before entering politics is a concern for respondents. 25% of respondents prefer candidates from academia, followed by the military (20.8%), and activists (14.5%),” said KIC Survey Manager, Satria Triputra Wisnumurti, in a press release on Tuesday (November 14, 2023).

This KIC survey was conducted from October 11-17, 2023, involving 1,005 respondents proportionally distributed across Indonesia's 34 provinces.

All respondents were young people, namely Gen Z aged 17-26 years (50.4%) and millennials aged 27-42 years (49.6%), who possess mobile phone numbers.

The survey utilized tSurvey data collection, capable of accurately reaching respondents by leveraging telco data insights. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 3.1% at a 95% confidence level.
