Average Years of Schooling in Yogyakarta Reached 9.55 Years in 2020

The average years of schooling (AYS) for residents aged 25 and over in Yogyakarta has been steadily increasing each year. In 2020, the AYS was recorded at 9.55 years, a 1.81% increase from 2019's 9.38 years.

The AYS for Yogyakarta residents aged 25 and over is equivalent to completing Junior High School (SMP). Furthermore, Yogyakarta's AYS is above the national average AYS of 8.48 years in 2020.

The increase in Yogyakarta's AYS indicates an improvement in the quality of human capital in the productive age group. AYS is the total number of years spent by residents in formal education. Its purpose is to determine the quality of education in a given region.

In addition to AYS, there have been improvements in the net enrollment ratio (NER). Yogyakarta's NER at the primary school (SD) level increased from 99.5% in 2019 to 99.6% in 2020.

At the senior high school (SMA) level, Yogyakarta's NER increased from 70.5% in 2019 to 71% in 2020. However, Yogyakarta's NER for junior high school (SMP) remained stagnant at 84%.
