Medan's Economy: The Largest in North Sumatra

Medan City is the largest contributor to the North Sumatra economy. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the gross regional domestic product (GRDP) at current prices of the city amounted to Rp 242.2 trillion in 2020. This value is equivalent to 30% of the total North Sumatra GRDP of Rp 811.3 trillion.

Medan's economy is supported by the construction and manufacturing sectors. The GRDP of the construction sector in the city contributed Rp 45.61 trillion or 18.83%, while the manufacturing industry contributed Rp 34.19 trillion or 14.12% of the total economy.

Deli Serdang Regency is in second place with a GRDP of Rp 110.15 trillion, followed by Langkat Regency in third place with a GRDP of Rp 43.21 trillion.

Meanwhile, Pakpak Bharat is the regency/city with the smallest GRDP, at only Rp 1.21 trillion. Above it is West Nias Regency with a GRDP of Rp 1.9 trillion and North Nias Regency with a GRDP of Rp 3.71 trillion.

Medan also recorded as the regency/city with the largest GRDP per capita last year, namely Rp 105.53 million. Batu Bara Regency is in second place with a GRDP per capita of Rp 83.28 million and South Labuhan Batu Regency is in third place with a GRDP per capita of Rp 81.78 million.

Meanwhile, West Nias Regency is recorded as the regency/city with the lowest GRDP per capita, at only Rp 22.1 million. Above it is South Nias Regency with a GRDP per capita of Rp 22.21 million and Pakpak Bharat Regency with a GRDP per capita of Rp 24.38 million.
