The Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at current prices in East Kutai Regency reached Rp159.5 million in 2024. The GRDP of this regency grew by 9.82% compared to the previous year's Rp168.27 million.
Compared to the COVID-19 pandemic period in 2020, the economic growth in this region is higher. Previously, the growth at the end of the post-pandemic year 2021 was recorded at a decline of 0.89%.

According to BPS publications, with a total population of 433,330 people, the per capita GRDP in this region was recorded at Rp344.49 million per capita per year. This per capita GRDP ranks 11th nationally.
Of the 17 sectors driving the economy of this regency, the mining and quarrying sector is the leading one.
In first place is the mining and quarrying sector. In 2024, this sector contributed the largest GRDP value of Rp120.46 million. This GRDP grew by 10.12%.
Next, the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector grew by 1.11% to Rp14.03 million, and the manufacturing industry sector grew by 21.77% to Rp6.92 million.

In addition, the other sectors contributing to the top five are wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles with a GRDP of Rp3.95 million.

In terms of distribution level, the main sector contributing the largest GRDP growth in East Kutai Regency is the mining and quarrying sector with a contribution of 82.92%. The other sectors in the top five are agriculture, forestry and fisheries, manufacturing industry, construction, and wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.
Meanwhile, the sectors with the smallest distribution are the Human Health and Social Work Activities Sector, Financial and Insurance Activities Sector, Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities Sector, Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply Sector, and Water Supply; Sewerage, Waste Management and Remediation Activities Sector.
