The Indonesian government has implemented a tax on the digital economy sector since July 2020.

According to data from the Directorate General of Taxes (DJP), at the beginning of its implementation, tax revenue from the digital economy sector was only around Rp731 billion.

Electronic System Trading Tax (PMSE): Rp26.17 trillion
Fintech or P2P lending tax: Rp3.23 trillion
Tax on procurement of goods/services through the Government Procurement Information System (SIPP): Rp2.95 trillion
Crypto tax: Rp1.21 trillion

The largest revenue came from PMSE deposits, namely e-commerce or marketplace companies such as Shopee, Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Blibli; and digital service providers such as Google, Meta, TikTok, Spotify, Netflix, and others.

The DJP also stated that it will continue to strive to expand tax collectors and payers in the digital economy sector.

"In order to create fairness and equality in business for both conventional and digital businesses, the government will continue to appoint PMSE businesses that sell products or provide digital services from abroad to consumers in Indonesia," said the DJP in a press release (14/3/2025).

"The government will explore the potential for tax revenue from other digital economy businesses, such as crypto tax on crypto asset trading transactions, fintech tax on interest paid by borrowers, and SIPP tax on transactions for the procurement of goods and/or services through the Government Procurement Information System," they said.
